Week 103: Beacons

I took a trip to the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn to see if I could get something interesting. Sadly, I was a little too late and it was neat dark already. I was walking back to the subway when I looked up and saw these three in one frame. Interesting, don't you think?
This is the last post of The Weekly Photo Project.

Week 102: Of Snow and Light

New York got more than a generous dusting of snow this week, the flakes almost standing still in mid-air making it impossible to see more than a few feet ahead. One of my favorite benches by the river stood bathed in white strobes, diffused by the snow. Lovely, I thought.
Shot with a Nikon D700.

Week 101: Roots

No clever words for this one. I was out on the promenade, being sandblasted by clumps of snow. The trees looked pretty so I shot. Simply turning them upside down gave them a whole new meaning. Suddenly they were more than just trees in the snow. Keep staring, it grows on you.

Week 100: Sentinel

I decided to brave the first snow storm of the season. Sunday evening is bad as it is. The last thing I needed was to be cooped up at home. So I went. Carl Schurz Park was abandoned except for a few kids burning through the last of their sugar highs and some very determined dog owners. The light was all but gone. I did have my tripod but probably wouldn't be able to set it up against the constant whip of the wind in my face. The promenade was empty and I could barely see five feet ahead of me. Roosevelt Island was just across the water, its lighthouse standing guard in the snow. I steadied myself against the railing and shot.
Shot with a Nikon D700.

Week 99: German Solar Flare

I was experimenting with the Hipstamatic iPhone app and came up with some fun results. This one in particular looked like German solar flare.

Week 98: Not Paper Flowers

2010 felt like it was around for about two weeks. Like the flowers on my living room table -- too much of a good thing, but gone soon.
Shot on a Nikon D700.

Week 97: While You Were Sleeping

We drove around quite a bit in Morocco, especially between towns. We got most of our rest on these drives, but I found it hard to keep my eyes closed lest I miss something. We were headed from Essaouira to Marrakech, a four hour drive through nowhere. The landscape was bleak, and after the first hour or so, almost everyone passed out. I kept watch. Thank God I did.

Week 96: Time Traveler

My least favorite city in Morocco was Marrakech. Too much like a big city, noisy and crowded and fast. None of that old world charm I'd come to expect after Fes. Well, almost none. As I walked the many floors of the Ben Youssef Madrasa, I felt like I'd fallen through a genuine wormhole. I explored the little rooms the children studied and slept in, the intricate passageways and medieval bunk beds. Across the enclosed courtyard, I spotted a fellow traveler.

Week 95: Moonset on Mars

Some of the things I've picked up while shooting over the years still hold me in good stead. One of these little pearls is 'when everyone is looking one way, look the other'. We awoke at the crack of dawn and clambered out of our tents. We were camped in the Sahara with a Bedouin guide. We grabbed our cameras and set out over the nearest dune to photograph the rising sun. But honestly, I had little interest in a sunrise. I'd shot hundreds before and this one wasn't all that. So, I turned around and looked the other way. And I saw my first moonset.

Week 94: Old and New

When you walk the streets of Fes, you experience a city frozen in time. But every so often you come across something that reminds of the day and age you're in. I was taking an early walk to catch the city in first light. As I approached the Tombs of Merinides perched on the hilltop right by the Medina's north walls, I steadied myself for a shot. As I clicked, a French automobile screamed across the frame. How apt, I thought.
